Pure Strain Blue Tilapia fingerlings at $4.00 each.
Now is the time for stocking your pond or your large aquarium. Congress is right now considering a law which would outlaw the shipping of non-native fish (HR669) except for Goldfish. This is an extremely busy time of the year for stocking fish!
Pure Strain Blue Tilapia are some of the most rare and highly sought after of all tilapia. Our fish have come down from wild, Pure Strain Blue Tilapia stock and produce almost equal numbers of male and female offspring, often considered a sign of purity. Pure Strain Tilapia are getting almost impossible to find. The original stock (caught in the wild in rivers and lakes in Africa over 40 years ago) have been responsible for producing many generations of these Pure Strain Tilapia; and throughout the years, their progeny have shown no genetic signs typical of inbreeding which is also evidence of purity. The history of cultured stocks of Tilapia is typically uncertain, but this stock is to the best of our knowledge free of introgression from any other species. Sometimes you will note the birth of occasional albinos, this is not a genetic “defect, ” just a rarity. Some females will produce a few albinos in each spawn --- but they grow just as well as any normal Tilapia. Pure Strain Tilapia is considered the most prolific tilapia for use as a forage fish for largemouth bass and other predacious fish. Mozambique, Nile, and Horonorum Tilapia can normally live in water temperatures above 55°F, and Blue Tilapia can live in water as low as 48°F. Spawning usually begins at 65°F to 70°F and the growth rates are phenomenal above 80°F. These fish are VERY smart, hardy, fast swimmers, and once larger than 2 inches they can avoid nearly all predation in warmer waters. It has been reported that in seining operations to harvest them in some countries, it has been shown that they will lie flat on their sides on the bottom of the lake or pond to avoid capture! That's why many farming operations must completely drain their pond to be able to harvest their fish.
It is said by some that male Tilapia will grow faster than females. The reason for this is because the female doesn't eat while incubating (brooding) the eggs in her mouth, therefore, some aquaculturists feel that it is better to have an all male population. One of the ways to assure an almost all male population is by hybridizing two different species within the Tilapia genus to produce a high percentage of males. When a male of the O. Hornorum is crossed with a female Mossambica, the result is a non-natural convolution of the chromosomes --- the male O.Hornorum having a ZZ chromosome, and the female Mossambica having an XX chromosome --- the result being that the Z chromosome will be dominant over the X chromosome so that the male fry end up with a ZX chromosome. This does not occur in nature, since the O. Hornorum come from Madagascar, and the O. Mossambica are native to Africa.
"Hybrids are crosses between two species. the most common are crosses between the Aurea and Nile or Aurea and Mossambica. Hybrids grow faster and tend to be more robust than the parent stock. They tend not to breed true and second generation often are inferior fish." - Tilapia Breeder - New York
The problem with hybridizing is that you no longer have a pure strain fish, which will not breed true to either strain in it's parentage --- kind of like crossing a horse and a donkey and the result is a Jackass or Mule which is sterile and cannot breed at all. To keep two or three different strains of pure breeders is beyond the ability of most home breeders, so they end up buying new stock every time they harvest.
As the Tilapia breeder above has said, " Female Tilapia will grow almost as fast and almost as large as a male if they are prevented from breeding. A simple screen or net an inch or so above the bottom of the tank will prevent the female from picking up the eggs and incubating them."
So there's no real need to hybridize, or to chemically or genetically alter the sex of the fry and feed them hormonally and steroidal - laced feeds.
Most Tilapia sold commercially today are O. Nilotica and O. Mossambica, few of which can be claimed to be of pure strain; or are Hybrids with O. Hornorum. Many Niles, Mozambiques, and Blues are hybridized to produce nearly all male offspring and are often either genetically engineered or are chemically altered. How long do these drugs, steroids, and hormones stay in the body of the fish, --- do these drugs or the genetically engineered genes and DNA transfer to the humans in a harmful way? --- we haven't been able to find any research that will answer that question. Sometimes it takes 10, 20, 50 years for the answers to those questions to rear their ugly heads (i.e. Aluminum cooking utensils/Alzheimer's). These hybrids are common and have their own use and place in aquaculture, but do you want to feed something to your family that hasn't been properly tested? It seems the FDA will approve just about anything these days, with or without testing, all on the word of a lobbyist or researcher who only includes such information as will suit his purpose. Over 95% of all Tilapia today are raised for commercial food production, and are usually either genetically or chemically altered to produce the faster growing males, PLUS they are normally fed diets that often contain hormones and dangerous chemicals. This inevitably leads to a poorer quality fish offspring!
There are some stores here in the US that refuse to sell Genetically altered or hybrid fish, as well as those who have been fed steroidal/hormonal/drug-laced feeds!
Pure strain Blue Tilapia were a key to creating what is often called the "Super Male" used commercially to create 98% male offspring. This was a genetically engineered and highly cross-bred fish created strictly for the commercial food producer industry. TRUE breeding colonies of these “Super Male” fish may sell for as much as $30,000. Needless to say, very few people outside of large commercial operations will actually have these fish---or WANT them due to health risks involved. The PROBLEM with the super male is that the offspring, which do grow rapidly up to a pound or so, are a very inferior fish and successive generations produce poorer and poorer quality fish, and breeding colonies must be constantly replaced. One thing you will rarely be told about offspring from these "Super Males" is that to achieve the rapid growth, the large-scale food producers must feed diets supplemented with hormones such as testosterone and/or cancer causing chemicals that we end up eating! A Cuban research paper has shown what is used to produce these “Supermales” ......

From the book, Genetically engineered food by Knut Heller:”
Now I don't know about you, but I'm really not keen on the idea of having Human virus' and monkey virus' put into my food. To 'clean' this witches brew, they dip it into an E.Coli bath – I'm confused, I thought E.Coli wasn't a good thing! These GMO foods are the epitome of the old saying “monkey pus and turkey turds!” See our article on GMO'ed Fish.
What does GMO mean? “Genetically Modified Organism is the most common usage (though 'manipulated' or even 'mutated' might also be appropriate!) The acronyms GEO (Genetically Engineered Organism) or simply GM or GE are also used.
Genetic engineering is a radical new technology that forces genetic information across the protective species barrier in an unnatural way.” --- www.saynotogmos.org/
And how do they reverse the sex chemically? Here's another quote:
“The most commonly used synthetic estrogens for sex reversal are the non-steroidal estrogens, ethynylestradiol (EE) and diethylstibestrol (DES). DES is the more potent and once was used as a growth promotant in livestock until banned by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1979. Both are carcinogens. ”
Let's see, the FDA bans it for livestock feeds, then allows it for the fish we're expected to eat ..... how does that work?
The FDA bans hormones and steroids for athletes, yet they force-feed it to us in our food fish ........
Then, of course, there's the “fry bath” where the fry are dipped once or twice in testosterone, mestanalone, or estrogen for a period so that they can reverse the sex of the fry.....
“Bath treatments with estrogens have not successfully feminized tilapia. Rosenstein and Hulata (1993) treated O. mossambicus with 17-$-estradiol over a range of concentrations and durations with no effect on the sex ratios.
Toxicity is an issue in estrogen treatments. Eckstein and Spira (1965) reported high mortality of O. aureus fry when given stilbestrol diphosphate baths at 400-1000 :g/l."
So they can't make them all female, but they can make them all male .... what's wrong with this picture?
Of course, the food suppliers want to help out the growers, so they provide the treated feeds and good advice ......
“Since male Tilapia grow faster than females, it is advisable to use an all male population. Many Tilapia growers purchase all male sex-reversed Tilapia from fingerling producers who specialize in sex-reversal. --- Purina Mills”
It seems that the big feed companies would like to see growers continue to follow the GMO process, which would require the small grower/pond farmer to buy new stock each year instead of breeding their own ..... as you can see, this would totally prevent the home grower from obtaining pure strain fish for their own use!!
With Pure Strain Tilapia, each successive generation consistently produces a superior, high quality fish. The AVERAGE growth rate for Pure Strain Tilapia in a pond environment is 1.5 pounds in just 6-9 months NATURALLY, without steroids, hormones, or drugs in their meat!
“Typical market size for Tilapia is 1 pound or more. Larger fish are desired for the fillet market. Under optimal management and feeding conditions, Tilapia require 9-11 months of growth to reach market size. - Purina Mills”

“Tilapia is native to Africa and the Middle East. A decade ago, few people knew much about tilapia. Today, it has emerged to become the second biggest aquatic species group after the carp group, with a worldwide harvest of over 2 million metric tons (MT), about 5% of global finfish aquaculture.”
“It has taken the USA market by storm, from 25,000 MT (Metric tons) consumed in 1995 to almost 300,000 MT this year (USDA Statistics).”- Intervet, The Fish Site.com
You can start out with as few as 25 of our Pure Strain
Tilapia or as many as a whole pond full!
Super fast growth, extremely high food conversion ratio, the ability to thrive in horrible water conditions, early and high reproductivity rate....The list goes on and on. Also as an omnivore with the ability to extract nutrition from almost anything eaten, you can feed them almost anything, from yard waste such as lawn clippings and garden weeds to animal waste. In Asia, it is common to raise ducks and geese in ponds and use the tilapia to eat their waste as the ONLY food source. In these systems, the ducks and geese feed on excess tilapia fry, the tilapia eat the bird waste, then the pond water is pumped or poured as highly fertilized water onto vegetable plants to filter the water before draining back into the pond. After the short time it takes for the tilapia, ducks, geese and vegetables to become fully grown, what is not personally eaten, is often sold to commercial processors as food and shipped to us in the United States, Canada, and Europe for consumption. In larger "For-Profit" operations, hormone and chemical laden feed is USUALLY used to speed growth! In short, you have NO idea what is in those store bought Tilapia fillets!
Kashrut.com and the Orthodox Union say that True Tilapia are a clean, Kosher fish, but to be sure you are eating Tilapia, it must have the skin on it with the fins and the scales --- otherwise, it could be one of many different “unclean” fishes which might have the same color and texture of meat that the Tilapia has. We haven't heard back yet what Kashrut, Kosher.com and the CRC feel about Tilapia that are “genetically engineered” or “sex reversed.” When and if we get an answer from these agencies, we will happily publish their response here.
Customers should be advised only to purchase fish from a reliable kosher fish store, or only fish with skin on that they can personally identify. The FDA warns that species substitution is a serious problem even from their perspective. list updated March 11, 2003 --- www.kashrut.com/articles/fish/

Fish with scales that can be removed without ripping the skin are considered Biblically kosher, basically without consideration of chemicals used in their genetic modification or growth. -- Rabbi Chaim Goldberg
Editor's note: So, regardless of the fact that the fish are infused with human and monkey virurii, the Orthodox Union still considers them "Kosher" ..... you might want to decide for yourself in this case ;-).

Being able to grow your own high quality food is becoming more and more popular, not only because you can control the chemicals and radiation you are exposed to in your food, but with the economic uncertainties facing the world, it may be a realistic need for survival in the future. Aquaponic systems can be very elaborate and expensive or very simple and inexpensive to build and maintain. YOU choose what is right for you and your family! Most importantly, YOU can provide a steady, safe, healthy, great tasting, and SELF-SUSTAINABLE food supply for YOUR family that is always available in ANY time of need. Experts predict that due to out-of-control-debt, Hyper-Inflation is less than three years away and the cost of food will likely increase over 1000% in that time---It is already happening---Here is your chance to be prepared! Aquaponic systems and food production capabilities are only limited by your own imagination! The potential is limitless!
Just a small sample of the many uses and benefits of
Our Pure Strain Tilapia in the typical Sport Fish pond
We encourage you to do even more research on this
Our Pure Strain Tilapia are the safest, most cost effective way to rid your pond of the unhealthy Blue Green and unsightly Filamentous Algae (AKA FA or Pond Scum), as well as, Duckweed, Millfoil, Overgrown Lilly Pads, Parrot's Feather, Chara, and many, many more undesirable water plants. In lakes and ponds, our Pure Strain Tilapia are an incredible, chemical free way to quickly rid your waters of choking weeds and unsightly string algae (FA) that make fishing almost impossible and certainly less enjoyable. As a bonus, in ponds our Pure Strain Tilapia are unmatched for providing a huge number of offspring which provide a highly nutritious forage, or prey fish, for Large Mouth Bass, Blue Gill, Yellow Perch, Crappie and any other predator fish species. In short, by eating plant life for nourishment that other fish simply CAN'T, our Pure Strain Tilapia provide your Sport fish with MORE nutrition at less expense than ANY other method! It is a win-win solution!
Our Pure Strain Tilapia are not a colorful African Cichlid, but they are considered a "Tropical Fish". Mozambique, Nile, and Horonorum Tilapia can normally live in water temperatures above 55°F, so their life in ponds north of Southern Florida is seasonal and short lived at best. Blue Tilapia can live in water as low as 48°F. and usually live in open waters from early April till well into November adding from 2-4 months to their life span in ponds. Horonorums, Mozambiques, Blues and Niles will need to be in heated ponds, aquariums, or stock tanks to survive the cold seasons in most states.
“Tilapia are strictly warm water fish, and cannot be over-wintered outdoors in most of the U.S. Ponds are often stocked for Tilapia grow out over the summer. Recirculating systems are also used. Many recirculating systems are indoors and kept warm for production throughout the year. - Purina Mills”
Pure Strain Blue Tilapia become sexually mature at around 11 weeks of age, Mozambiques are next at about 12-13 weeks, and Niles are the slowest to mature at about 16-18 weeks --- and by spawning about every 5 to 6 weeks, each female can produce several hundred offspring in a single season for predators to eat in a pond situation, or for the home grower to freeze for food. This takes a tremendous pressure off the normal forage base (normally Bluegill, Bass, Perch etc.), allowing them to thrive as well. Each female will produce 200 to 300 surviving mixed sex fry at each spawn. These are an easy fish to grow out in a 55 gallon or larger aquarium, a plastic or fiberglass stock tank or a 50 gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck storage container. Stocking densities can be extremely high. In intensively managed closed systems, stocking rates of 3 pounds per gallon are not uncommon, although we recommend a density no higher than your experience and filtration capabilities allow.
Our Pure Strain Tilapia are Mouth-Brooders, so the females keep the eggs and fry protected in the mouth of the female until the fry are old enough to live on their own. Most fry will survive and seek shelter in plant growth eating decaying leaves and detritus. The growth rate is astounding, sometimes over an inch per week. This rapid growth is because our Pure Strain Tilapia convert food at around a 1.2 to 1 ratio, Meaning for every 1.2 pounds of food they eat, they will grow 1 pound. Catfish and Bluegill ratios are around 4 to 1, Crappie 6 to 1, and Bass are slow at around 10 to 1. Our Pure Strain Tilapia are known to grow as much as 3 pounds in as little as 9 months. Average growth is 1.5 pounds in 6 to 9 months.
Water quality and dissolved oxygen levels in ponds and lakes are dramatically and rapidly improved by adding tilapia as well. This is due to the tilapia eating vast quantities of duckweed, millfoil, wolffia, muck and decay in the pond that would otherwise add ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and other toxins to the water. Also by eating this debris, far less oxygen is consumed that would normally be used in the decay process.
There is no need to worry about overstocking Our Pure Strain Tilapia in your pond, because of their temperature requirements and dying at around 48 degrees. Our Pure Strain Tilapia actually increase any ponds' carrying capacity due to the increase in dissolved oxygen, decrease in toxins and detritus, and being a prey fish. During warmer months, spawning occurs at a feverish pace with most fry under 2 inches being eaten by the smaller forage and predator fish such as the young bass and bluegill. Survivors reaching the 2+ inch range often out-swim most other predators until the temperatures begin to fall. At around 60 degrees, they will begin to get lethargic. This will happen in the autumn. Then your Bass, Catfish, Crappie, Bluegill, Yellow Perch, Hybrid Striped Bass, and all other predators will gorge themselves with the now slow swimming high quality, high protein, natural food at the time of year they need the food the most in preparation for winter. Because of this high quality, easy to catch NATURAL food source, all other fish, including prey fish in the ecosystem enter the hard winter months much fatter and healthier. Even after death, turtles, fox, raccoons, and many other animals will quickly dispose of the remains and also gain a much needed quality food. Within a couple days of death, there will rarely be a trace of tilapia left, meaning nearly 100% of wasted plant life eaten by the tilapia becomes a food source for the entire food chain. Of course, YOU can eat our Pure Strain Tilapia too, no hormones, no steroids, no drugs, no genetic engineering, unless it's in the feed that YOU buy for them! They fight like demons on a rod and reel plus they taste GREAT!!

Montana Laws Concerning the Raising of Tilapia
Monday, 22 Jun, 09 - I have just had a conversation with a State Game Warden who has informed me that there will be no licenses or pond permits issued for pond raising of any type of Tilapia in the State of Montana. From my conversation with the Game Warden, it is still legal to raise them inside a shop, greenhouse, basement or garage in stock tanks or aquariums, without interference or licensing from the state.
It is illegal to have any outdoors fish tanks without approval from the State of Montana.
We do not knowingly sell any Tilapia for pond raising to Montana residents or for planting in any type of outdoors tank, trough, barrel, tub or pond located within the borders of Montana.
Anyone wishing to order pure strain Blue Tilapia for pond raising, must live outside of the State of Montana. If you live in Montana, and your pond is outdoors you will not get approval for raising Pure Strain Blue Tilapia, Nile Tilapia, or Mozambique Tilapia from the Montana State Dept. of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks.
ANY tropical fish that is being used for an office or residence and is considered a pet does not come under the administrative regulations of FWP, according to their website. In Montana, our Tilapia are sold only as pets, we do not sell pond fish in Montana.
There, I've said it at least five times in five ways, that should be clear enough that the FWP will believe that I have let my Montana customers know that they can't do what they want on their own property ;-) ........... just trying to do some CYA if ya know what I mean ......... ;-).
