We raise feeder Guppies for our Tilapia juveniles and
they are in the carnivorous stage - once they reach the Young Adult
stage, the Tilapia ignore the Guppies and become herbivorous. We
encourage you to raise feeder guppies for your young Tilapia and see
how they love to eat the Guppies as well as
AquaFarms Fish Food.
We suggest two ways of raising Guppies as Tilapia food.
ONE - If you are raising the tilapia in an aquarium or tank, get a birthing screen for the
Guppies that hangs on the inside of the fish tank. Make sure that it's big enough for a male
and a few females. Let them breed to their hearts content. When they give birth, the fry
will slip through the screen and into the main tank. If you float Guppy Grass on the top of
the water, they will be able to hide from the Tilapia ...... usually! When they make the
mistake of coming out of their hiding places for food, they will become dinner for the
Tilapia. We are looking in to finding large birthing screens and when we find an
adequate vendor, we will make them available on our site!
TWO - Raise them in a separate 10 or 20 gallon tank. when they are 1/2" to 3/4" or so in
length, scoop out some in a net , (preferrably mostly males so that you have more females
producing - one male can handle several females), Keep them in a separate container of
water (jar or pitcher) until you have scooped out as many as you plan to feed, and then put
them all into the Tilapia tank at once. That way, all of the Tilapia will have a chance at these
tasty little tidbits, rather than a dominating male or female getting most of them if you dump
them in one or two at a time. If they are provided with Guppy Grass or floating plastic
plants, they will be able to hide for a while. I've had some last as much as a week before
they get caught by the Tilapia. Tilapia are very fast, but some feedeer Guppies are faster!
We feed our Guppies AquaFarms Fry crumbles - they grow fast, and it provides them with
a high quality protein diet.
